New districts important for caucuses
February 8, 2002
Two ISU residence hall associations have become their own voting precinct after the changes in legislative districts and county precincts.
The new districts will effect next week’s party caucuses.
Every 10 years, in accordance with census results, the lines that designate voting districts in Iowa change, said David Harvey, Story County deputy auditor for real estate.
The Richardson Court and Union Drive residence associations are now student-only voting precincts, “with the possible exception of President [Gregory] Geoffroy,” Harvey said.
County precincts, which dictate where people vote, cannot have more than 3,500 people, he said.
Several local representatives were jostled out of their old district into a new one.
Rep. Jane Greimann, D-Ames, has represented House District 61 in Ames in the Iowa Legislature since 1999. The newly-drawn lines moved her into House District 45.
Rep. Barbara Finch, R-Ames, has been moved from her post in Iowa House District 62 into House District 45.
The two representatives could have found themselves pitted against each other in the upcoming elections, but Finch decided to run for Iowa Senate, Harvey said.
Jan Bauer, chairwoman of the Story County Democrats, said she is optimistic about her party’s chances in the upcoming elections.
“We are pleased with the new boundaries and new student precincts,” she said. “We were surprised to see Barbara Finch run for Senate rather than the House.”
Jim Kurtenbach, chairman of the Story County Republicans, said no candidates have changed their election plans because of the redistricting.
“We think that we’ll actually increase the number of seats held,” said Kurtenbach, associate professor of accounting.
Voter caucuses for the Democratic, Republican and Green parties will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, Bauer said.
