Iowa State dominated South Dakota State on Friday, and now on Sunday, it’ll look to continue that trend.

The Cyclones will host Utah Valley in Hilton Coliseum on Sunday after Iowa State just came off of a 47-0 win two days before.

“I think they’re [going to] bring a toughness,” said coach Kevin Dresser. “They’re [going to] compete with us hard for seven minutes.”

Utah Valley’s starting lineup looks good on paper, but the Wolverines have had a number of injury concerns spring up recently that has decimated their team.

One of the more notable injuries is to No. 9 Matt Findlay at 141-pounds.

Findlay was set to match up against redshirt sophomore Ian Parker for the Cyclones, and this was supposed to be another weekend with top tier competition for Parker.

More and more it’s looking like Findlay will have to sit out of the dual against the Cyclones, and Parker will get an easier opponent.

“Dresser always tells us, the most important match is the next one,” Parker said.

Although Parker looks to have a weaker opponent on Sunday, he is still preparing for the dual the same way that he always does.

At heavyweight, redshirt sophomore Gannon Gremmel will have his hands full with No. 9 Tate Orndorff of Utah Valley.

Orndorff is 18-4 overall this year, with his most recent loss coming on Friday against North Dakota State’s Brandon Metz who pinned him in 1:03.

Utah Valley lost that dual 47-3 because of their injury problems, and earlier this week against South Dakota State, who Iowa State beat 47-0, Utah Valley lost 26-16.

The injuries have hurt their team, and there are no signs of that slowing down against Iowa State.

Regardless of the competition, this was a welcome weekend for Iowa State as it put a halt on the traveling.

“It’s nice to be home,” Dresser said. “This weekend, we’ll really enjoy being at Hilton.”

The Cyclones are 5-0 at home this year, while they are 3-2 on the road. Their road competition has included two top five teams, but they still seem to thrive off of the energy at Hilton Coliseum.

On Friday, the main attraction of the meet was the unexpected pin that freshman Zane Mulder earned in his first collegiate wrestling match.

While freshman Logan Schumacher remains sidelined at 165-pounds, Mulder will continue to wrestle in his place, and eyes will be on him as he tries to prove that Friday wasn’t a fluke.

After Utah Valley, the Cyclones are off until next Monday where they will take Oregon State in Corvallis, Oregon.

After a demanding January, the Cyclones will have some breaks and time to rest during the month of February.

Dresser is happy at how his team fared in the month prior.

“I give us high marks for the month of January,” Dresser said. “My word all year has been progress and building, and that happened in January.”
