GSB to visit capital in lobbying effort

Members of the Government of the Student Body will travel to Des Moines Thursday morning to make a plea to the Iowa State Legislature to put higher education at the forefront of its priorities.

“We’re basically looking for the high quality of education that we deserve for the amount of money we are paying for tuition,” said GSB Director of Government Relations Mike Banasiak.

GSB President Andy Tofilon and Vice President Charlie Johnson will speak at a news conference in Des Moines tomorrow along with representatives from the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa.

“In general, the GSB members are there to represent students at the university and talk to the legislature about the economic situation in Iowa and how it affects high education,” Banasiak said.

In other action, GSB voted 27-3 to postpone the vote on a senate resolution proposing Dead Week become a university-endorsed policy until next week.

“Next Tuesday we will have a final draft ready, and it will not change,” Tofilon said.

Tofilon and GSB Director of Academic Affairs T.J. Schneider have been redrafting the Dead Week proposal through the last week and are seeking additional input from the ISU community. The current version of the proposal can be viewed on the GSB Web site at http://www.gsb.iastate.edu.

Tofilon said he plans to speak Thursday with the Academic Affairs Council about the Dead Week proposal.

“We are working hand in hand with the faculty on this issue,” he said.

Tofilon said he hopes the Dead Week proposal will be implemented as soon as possible.

“We’re hoping it would come into effect for this finals week, but that may be an unrealistic expectation,” he said.

In other action, GSB discussed legislation to enter into a finance contract with the Iowa State Daily. Under the five-year renewable contract, the Daily would not have to go through the annual GSB allocations process each year to receive its funding.

“To get a comparable service, we will never find one for this cheap and of this magazine,” said Andrew Kothenbeutel, TRA.
