Graduate colleges rank in top 10

Graduates from two ISU departments are possibly some of the most coveted in the nation.

Iowa State’s interior design and architecture programs were both nationally ranked in the top 10 by “DesignIntelligence,” a professional publication.

The ranking, of programs that best prepare students for entry into and success in their field after graduation, is the result of a survey of design professionals.

Provost Rollin Richmond said the rankings will affect the academic departments as a whole and will also boost faculty morale.

“In the academic world, the judgment of colleagues and peers is terribly important,” Richmond said. “This is a significant achievement for the two departments.”

Iowa State’s architecture program placed seventh on the list.

Calvin Lewis, professor and chair of architecture, said he believes the national ranking will encourage the program’s participants.

“This is a positive reinforcement of the effort put forth by the faculty and students,” Lewis said.

Lewis said he feels the national ranking will encourage potential students as well.

“The ranking is an indication for prospective students on the potential of what an education at Iowa State might be,” he said.

The ranking also may encourage awareness around the country and attract students from outside the Midwest.

“Our graduate program is also a great asset that may attract students,” Lewis said.

Iowa State’s interior design program was ranked 10th on its list.

Roger Baer, associate professor of art and design, said he feels the ranking reflects the exceptional effort put forth by those involved.

“This is the result of the good quality of faculty and students as well as their hard work,” Baer said.

Dorothy Fowles, professor of art and design, said the interior design program is successful with students.

“We have a good, solid orientation mission and program objectives,” Fowles said.

The ranking is being viewed as a significant honor by the interior design program because it comes from people working in the market who are hiring ISU students, Baer said.

The program plans to use the honor to attract future students.

“We will use it as a recruitment tool to recruit better-quality students, and more students,” Baer said.

Fowles also said the ranking will affect the program in small, subtle ways.

“People may make the decision to come here rather than go to another school,” Fowles said.

Though there is no official ranking system, Baer said Iowa State’s programs are well-known within professional organizations and receive accreditation through them.
