Children, families participate in Brunnier museum activities

The chance to experience and interact with art brought 10-year-old Ann Chung out of the sunshine and into the Brunnier Art Museum Sunday.
Ann was one of about 15 children and their families who took part in an “If they could talk” Showcase, which focused on the Marc Sijan’s ultra-realistic sculpture display.
“I liked the realistic people,” Ann said. “I enjoyed the creative faces station.”
The event featured six stations for the kids, including creative writing, making creative faces, a scavenger hunt, mask decorating, creating handprint magnets and drawing.
Kelly Moore, junior in communication studies, volunteered at the mask-decorating station. She said the event was a great chance for kids to experience art.
“This makes art tangible to the kids,” she said.
Matthew DeLay, curator for University Museums, said the goal of the museum staff is to provide a place for families and children to spend time together.
“We want to make the exhibitions and collections accessible to others,” he said. “The idea is to do fun things.”
Allison Sheridan, program assistant for University Museums, said the event allowed children to spend some informal time in the museum.
“Our goal was to get kids to interact with the art and bring art into their world,” she said. “How often can you get messy in a museum?”
The Brunnier Art Museum will be hosting more family day events this spring, including “Toys of the World” in cooperation with the Y.W.C.A. of Iowa State on March 3 and “Natural Dyes” on April 14.
