LETTER:More than Catholics believe life is precious
January 18, 2002
In his letter to the editor Thursday, Dan Skinner wrote, “You have the right to hold any set of beliefs, no matter how contradictory, dangerous, or just plain wacky. Beyond the personal sphere, though, the religious have to play by the same rules as the rest of us.”
I remember someone telling people they “believed” the world was
round .
I remember someone telling people they “believed” we would travel to the moon .
I also remember someone telling people they “believed” we are not the only galaxy in the sky .
If you have taken a religion class, or have study religions of nations, you will see all accepted religions have some common factors:
1. They believe in something
higher.
2. They believe that all life is
precious.
3. They believe in helping others
The different religions come from adapting different levels of these basic beliefs.
In Asia, you will find several religions who cherish the life of all things, including the bugs they sweep away so they won’t step on them. In the Middle East, you will find people who stop whatever they are doing to pray as a mass, because their religion isn’t something the they believe in, it’s something they live.
So remember, it’s not just Catholics who believe life is precious. We have many people who save the whales and millions of federal grant money is spent to save the rainforests and all the animals who live there.
Are these people “playing by the rules?”
If you want to continue to believe the world is still flat, that is your choice, but I choose to “believe” the world is round.
