oh my god. not your basic rock
January 25, 2002
With two out of the three band members remaining seated for most of the show, Chicago band oh my god. doesn’t seem to resemble the basic rock act. Nor does its instrumentation, which consists of drums, bass and organ.
Now the band will play the Maintenance Shop Friday along with Manplanet.
“People are confused – it throws them for a loop – with no guitar and all,” said organist Iguana.
This day seems hectic for Iguana. Earlier in the day the band’s Web site crashed, and now, Iguana says their ISP is not bringing it back up. He remains calm though; with the release of the band’s second album, “Action Album!” there are more important things to consider.
“There are a lot of hormones, both in the title and in the songs,” Iguana said. “But it’s also about pure celebrations of love and relationships.”
Much of what the new album deals with is in the relationship category, but there’s much more. The song “14” is, in Iguana’s words, “the worst birds and the bees lesson ever.”
The song seems to live up the description, including lines such as, “You came from your mother’s body and we’ll leave it at that.”
“We have a pretty wide-ranging taste,” Iguana said. “I like the stuff that has more overdriven tones.”
Directing the subject matter of the songs is the wide ranging influences that inspire Iguana and his writing partner, bassists and vocalist BillyO’Neill. From the list, there are the obvious ones like electro-pop groups like Kraftwerk, but also there are more abstract ones, Iguana says, like Rage Against the Machine, Ani DiFranco, Black Sabbath, or older punk bands like Husker Du and Television.
“We tend to bring more energy to a show than 95 percent of the rock bands out there,” Iguana said.
