Freshman design students compete

Design students will flex their creative muscles starting Wednesday in a College of Design competition running through Jan. 23.

More than 130 teams of freshman students will vie against each other to create a new image for the Ames power plant in the first Freshman Creativity Competition and Exhibition in the college’s atrium.

The competition’s opening ceremony is Wednesday at 7 p.m. Bill Boon, professor emeritus, will be grand marshal and give a seminar on creativity.

ISU to honor Dr. King with events

The ISU community will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a series of citywide events, including several speakers and musical performances.

King will be commemorated on campus during a musical celebration presented by the Point of Grace Choir and members of the ISU Chamber Choir. The concert will begin at noon Friday. The celebration also includes a dramatic reading by the World Theatre Group and remarks from ISU President Gregory Geoffroy, GSB President Andy Tofilon and Black Student Alliance President Robert Price.

Also included in the schedule of events is the lecture “Living with a Purpose” in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. The lecture, given by Jamal-Harrison Bryant, former director of the Youth and College Division of the NAACP, will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23.

Other events on campus include ISU carilloneur Tin-Shi Tam’s concert in King’s honor at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16.

In observance of the holiday, university offices will be closed and there will be no classes Monday, Jan. 21.
