Hemingway’s travels in Europe subject of new summer class

This summer students have the opportunity to literally trace the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway by taking a study-abroad class titled “Hemingway in Paris and Spain.”

The class will run from May 15 to June 6, and students will spend one week each in Paris, Spain and the south of France.

Randall Huff, professor of English, will teach the class and share his deep appreciation for Hemingway.

“It took two months to plan everything, but it’s been a lifetime in the making,” Huff said about the class.

Huff said this class is one of the only courses offered that will take students to two different countries.

Students will attend a lecture each day, and then they can spend the rest of their time exploring museums, bistros and even bullfights, Huff said.

Though many exciting events are on the agenda, Huff said, “we’ll be open to suggestions if someone has an idea of where they’d like to go.”

Each book read in the course, including “The Sun Also Rises” and “A Moveable Feast,” will be read in the place that inspired them, Huff said. He hopes students will be influenced by the locations and Hemingway’s “life of adventure” when they write their own short stories, plays and poems for the class.

“I’ve been to Paris five times – each time it delights and thrills,” Huff said.

He said he believes Parisians are “more appreciative of the aesthetics of life.”

When visiting Pamplona, Spain, Huff said he hopes students will take in the “romance of it all, the beauty of the sea.”

“Students will find this program to be very appealling, with a leader who is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable,” said Trevor Nelson, assistant director of study abroad.

Nelson also added that class is timed so it won’t interfere with Iowa State’s summer school program.

Applications for this course are due January 31, and are available at the study abroad center at 5 Hamilton Hall or online at www.iastate.edu/ ~study-abroad/Application.

The cost for the trip is approximately $2,000 and will include the price of hotels. Airfare is not included.
