LETTER:Hauser column more left-wing hypocrisy
January 16, 2002
In response to Andrea Hauser’s article (“Even the `King of Queers’ protected”), her sadly misguided argument sheds a glaring light on the hypocrisy that left-wing liberals and the Daily Editorial Board spew forth each day. Ms. Hauser claims that “just because the majority of Iowa taxpayers are Christian doesn’t give them the power to dictate how public facilities are used and by whom.” This sounds to me like a cry for freedom of speech, a cry for which I myself will shed a tear.
However, if the tables were turned and the students at UNI had produced a play that showed the actual teachings of Jesus Christ and spread the good news of his Gospel, I bet Ms. Hauser would send out an even more urgent cry for the separation of church and state. Heaven forbid a public university allow a play with a Christian message be presented in a building paid for by taxpayers.
If Ms. Hauser’s assertion is indeed correct that “just because the majority of Iowa taxpayers are Christian doesn’t give them the power to dictate how public facilities are used and by whom,” then tell me, who does get to dictate? Do people with no regard for the feelings of Christians call the shots? It would appear to be so.
UNI would never dare to support a play that bashed homosexuals or picked on a particular race or ethnic group. Such a production would be unthinkable for the repercussions it would have on the feelings of the people being trod upon. It would mean that a group of people were being singled out and ridiculed. That is precisely what “Corpus Christi” did to Christians. In our society that supposedly embraces all races, genders and religious affiliations, you can’t pick and choose the groups you’re going to bash in a venue that was paid for by everyone.
