LETTER:Hawthorn name change frivolous

Justin Shapiro

This is in response to an item mentioned in the article concerning the Regents’ vote on tasers. The end of the article states that they are also voting on whether to change the Hawthorn Court name to Charles F. Frederiksen Court. Now, I’m not troubled at the fact that they want to change the name of Hawthorn per se. I’m all for honoring the former director of residence, but I think this goes too far.

Think of all the things that this name change will affect. The street name and address that the school lists will have to change. Everyone that lives here will have to change their address for any incoming mail, and all the signs will have to be replaced with new ones with the current name.

School flyers will have to be reprinted with the new name, anything like the elevators with Hawthorn court etched in the metal inside will have to be replaced.

With the budget crunch and cuts, increase in tuition, and the $12.5 million that they are proposing spending on parking, can we really afford all this? Why not instead name the three new suites they are building by Friley, in honor of this man? This may sound trivial, but when the school reminds faculty to turn off lights when they leave a room to save that little bit on energy costs, doesn’t this show that every little bit helps?
