Ecology with ease

Sorority women in the greek community are working on a new recycling program to help “Greeks Go Green.”
“I cringe every time I throw away a can,” said Kelly Stevens, organizer of the program and member of Delta Delta Delta, 302 Ash Ave. “The only way to solve this problem is to step up and take action for ourselves.”
Members of the greek community are disappointed that the city does not have any type of program to pick up recyclable goods, but they are finding a solution.
Chapter members are being asked to collect and separate all cans, glass, newspapers, paper and batteries, said Stevens, junior in marketing.
A committee composed of members from Delta Delta Delta and other volunteers throughout the greek community will go to each chapter Tuesday nights to collect the goods and take them to the recycling center.
At the end of the semester, all money collected from these efforts will be donated to an environmental charity.
“I have received tremendous support, and everyone is excited to be involved with the program,” Stevens said. “I have high hopes for the program, and I believe it will become a tradition in our community.”
Currently, this program is featured only in sororities. Stevens said she will expand the system to include fraternities.
Stevens has been in contact with many chapters to get this program off the ground and has received positive responses from each, she said.
Erin Camponeschi, junior in materials engineering, helped organize the program within her Alpha Omicron Pi chapter, 2007 Greeley St.
“The women of Alpha Omicron Pi are really excited about the program, and I think it’s a really good idea, too,” she said. “We have had problems in the past taking [recyclables] to the recycling center.”
Collection will be easier with a centralized system, Camponeschi said. Each house will simply set out their recyclables Tuesday nights. She said the program “will catch on.”
“It really doesn’t take that much time, and it’s a good thing to do for the environment,” Camponeschi said.
