IRHA works on dorm door policy

The Inter-Residence Hall Association plans to discuss legislation on major issues this semester while the representatives plan for Residence Hall Week and elections.

One of the issues they will take on is the possibility of making condoms accessible in the residence halls.

IRHA was approached by the Student Health Advisory Committee late last semester about placing condom vending machines in some of the residence halls, and the issue will be one of the first discussed this semester, said IRHA President Paul Duncan.

“I think that we’ll do a very good job of talking to our constituencies and finding out their opinion on this issue,” he said.

IRHA members plan to bring the residence hall door policy to the floor, Duncan said.

The door policy was established by the Department of Residence to monitor what can and cannot be placed on dorm-room doors, an issue that touches on the civil liberties of students.

“We’ll also deal with the door policy and what materials may be posted on doors and what may not,” he said.

The residence hall terms and conditions will be reviewed this semester as well.

“Each year, we empower IRHA to deal with the [terms and conditions] to address the needs and wants of the students,” said John Shertzer, IRHA adviser. The entirety of the terms and conditions is up for discussion every semester, he said.

“This is a big issue, and we definitely want student input and feedback,” said Shertzer, residence life coordinator.

Changing the terms and conditions is a collaborative effort between the Department of Residence and the IRHA, said IRHA Vice President Dave Boike.

“The Department of Residence makes their suggested changes, then they deliver it to the IRHA,” he said. “We then discuss and change it some more and it is passed through [IRHA] parliament.”

IRHA also is planning Residence Hall Week, which begins Feb. 15.

Some of the events during the week are a Valentine’s Day-themed dance, a hypnotist, karaoke night and a date auction, said Heather Minish, IRHA director of special events. The Department of Residence and IRHA are also attempting to sell out the women’s basketball game Feb. 23, she said.

“This year we are planning on opening the events to more than just the residence halls,” Minish said.

“The whole theme behind Residence Hall Week is basically to show off the residence halls, so it’s open for everyone to see who we are and what we do.”
