Forums to open legislative discussion

Ames residents will have an opportunity to discuss issues in the State Legislature with local leaders during the first “Legislative Wake-up.”

The event is an opportunity for citizens to talk directly with legislators about activity at the state house, said Ruth Jones, publicity chairwoman for the League of Women Voters, the group that sponsors the event.

Local legislators will address upcoming issues of the legislative session, she said. A reaction panel with Ames Mayor Ted Tedesco and Story County Supervisor Wayne Clinton will bring a local perspective to the discussion.

“We’re interested in state budget and funding for universities and schools,” Tedesco said.

Judy Dolphin, executive director the Ames-ISU YWCA, will be moderating the debate.

“All representatives are always invited [to the Legislative Wake-up],” she said. “This is an opportunity for senators and representatives to tell their constituents what is going on at the Legislature, to let them know about issues and challenges. I’m anticipating lots of talk on the budget.”

Those who are unable to attend the event can watch a live broadcast on Channel 12 and phone in their questions, Dolphin said.

“We just hope that people will join us, either from the comfort of their own living room or at the Ames City Council Chambers,” she said.
