LETTER:Not all Christians are pro-life
January 23, 2002
I`d like to complement the Daily on its attempt to take a balanced approach presenting two of the opposing perspectives on the abortion debate with yesterday’s two-article feature.
I’m concerned, however, that the prominent placement of former FCA President Joe Vos’s comments in the piece on abortion opponents might lead some readers to incorrectly believe that Mr. Vos speaks for Christianity in general.
I’m a staunch Christian, a lifelong church-goer, and a firm believe in a woman’s right to choose – and there are many more like me.
We find the idea of denying women access to safe medical procedures, promoting needless government interference in the day-to-day lives of American citizens, and refusing to allow women to exercise their right to make basic decisions about their own reproductive health to be entirely inconsistent with Christ’s teachings of love, tolerance, and respect.
I hope that in the future we pro-choice Christians can do a better job of witnessing these beliefs, so that the public image of our religion can be defined by a mainstream respect for women’s rights, and not by the statements of a few vocal fundamentalists.
