Cy’s loses liquor license for 1 year

Students will have to wait at least a year to drink at Cy’s Roost.
The Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division decided last week to ban alcohol sales for a year at 121 Welch Ave., the location of Cy’s Roost.
“The decision has two sanctions – one applying to the licensee and the other applying to the premises,” said Judy Parks, assistant city attorney.
The licensee, Blue Jeans Forever Inc., received a two-year revocation of the ability to hold an alcoholic beverage license, Parks said.
In addition, 121 Welch Ave., which is also home to Don’s Deli and Lost & Found Lounge, is subject to a one-year period during which no one is able to serve – or buy – alcohol on the property.
Patrick Greene, former owner of the establishments, completed a 60-day suspension of his license only a few weeks before the incident of selling to a minor, which was the basis of the most recent case.
“Past violations by this license in the last several years have included repeated incidents of selling to persons underage and also bootlegging,” Parks said.
Greene sold his property to Andrew and Kelly White, who also own the Tip Top Lounge, 201 E. Lincoln Way, and Paddy’s Irish Pub and Sips, both at 124 Welch Ave.
Andrew White said they knew the risks associated with the previous owner when they bought the property.
“We hoped for the best but planned for the worst,” he said. “We got the worst.”
The Whites are not, however, deterred by the recent decision. They plan to renovate the building to get it ready to serve customers again next year.
“We are hoping to be able to re-open next January and look forward to serving our customers,” Andrew White said.
