University encourages conservation over break

In line with the university’s energy-saving campaign, students and faculty are being encouraged to conserve energy over winter break this year.

Turning down thermostats, unplugging unneeded appliances and cutting down on staffing over the break are all measures being taken to cut back on energy costs, said Warren Madden, vice president for Business and Finance.

A number of service functions crucial to the operation of the university will remain open, such as the library, Madden said, that will continue to be used by a significant number of people over the break.

The university holiday runs from after commencement on Dec. 22 through New Year’s Day. Madden said he expects a jump in savings over this period.

“We’re hoping to increase savings by $5,000 to $10,000 a day,” Madden said.

Minimal or no staffing over the holiday is also being encouraged by the ISU administration.

David Miller, director of Facilities Planning and Management, said one of the easiest things for people to do is to turn down thermostats to about 60 degrees.
