LETTER:Daily Sports not doing its job, part two

Kristen Vanek

The Iowa State Daily, serving ISU since 1890. Serving Iowa State? You guys may want to rethink that motto. As many people know, last weekend was the time when ISU and Iowa athletic teams met to see who had the bragging rights in the state of Iowa. Most people probably saw the two-part series that the Daily did on the basketball and the wrestling matchups. But how many people saw the article, about the women’s swimming and diving match? I’m willing to bet my life that no one saw that article because there wasn’t one.

There wasn’t even a single sentence simply stating that we were competing against Iowa this weekend. The Daily claims that they don’t have enough reporters to cover the swimming and diving team. That is the lamest excuse I have ever heard. You are the school newspaper; you report on university news. Your one and only job is to have reporters to cover the news of the university.

Is it unreasonable to think that there should be some coverage on the swimming and diving team? No, it is not. But it is highly unreasonable that I am having to write this letter to get coverage on our team. We may not produce revenue for the school or attract enough fans to fill Hilton, but we are a Division I athletic team and we represent this university. It’s about time that we get the respect that we deserve. I thought I would remind you guys, just in case you were confused, that it was only the men’s swimming and diving team that got cut last year. The women’s program is still here. Here’s my challenge to the Daily – stop making excuses and start doing your job.
