LETTER:Daily Middle East coverage lacking
December 5, 2001
It was really disappointing to see that the Daily, like all media networks in this country, is biased and one-sided to our favorite ally, Israel. While the Palestinian side has suffered many deaths through the past 14 months, we see that any loss of life on the Israeli side is over-covered with almost instantaneous responses from the White House.
Just in the week prior to the attacks in Haifa and Jerusalem, the Israeli army killed more than 20 Palestinians, one-third of them less than 12 years old. The Israeli army openly and remorselessly confessed planting an explosive device that killed five elementary school kids in Gaza last week. None was reported.
An Israeli offensive against the West bank town of Beit Rima last month left 16 Palestinians dead in one night. Nothing was reported. And 700 to 800 kills on the Palestinian side since Sept. 28, 2000, including more than 130 kills among children less than 12 years old and we barely hear any condemnation from the American government about “the excessive use of violence” by the Israeli side that uses American-made weapons to kill and are headed by General Sharon, a prime minister known for his war criminal records.
The tragic losses of Israeli and Palestinian lives should be dealt with in the same manner; terrorists do exist on both sides. The vicious cycle of violence should be broken. However, this will never happen as long as oppression and occupation are being imposed on the Palestinian side.
