EDITORIAL:Remember the past

It is a day that will live in infamy. Sixty years ago today the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked. There were 2,403 sailors killed in action, 1,178 wounded in action and 640 that accounted for.

It was a direct declaration of war against the United States by Japan. It was an act that brought the United States into the Second World War.

That generation will always remember where they were when the attack on Pearl Harbor was announced. Similarly, we are a generation that will always remember that the World Trade Center and Pentagon were attacked.

Before Pearl Harbor, many people felt this nation was invincible. They felt that a country would not consider attacking us on our own soil.

However, there is an important distinction to make. It is true the end result was a major loss of life. But Pearl Harbor was a military attack on a military target. However, Sept.11 was an act of terrorism committed against a public, nonmilitary target.

So in this time of war, remember the victims of Pearl Harbor. We must also remember the victims of Sept. 11. They were both attacks on human beings that touched the entire nation.

We cannot forget.
