LETTER:Daily Sports not doing its job, part one
December 11, 2001
The job of the Iowa State Daily, as with any newspaper, is to report the news. In particular, the Daily’s job is to report the news that is relevant to Iowa State. The sports page, for example, should cover all the collegiate-level sports that the school sponsors. This is not the case, and has not been the case since I have attended Iowa State.
As some readers know (no thanks to the Daily), in addition to the wrestling and basketball teams competing against the Hawkeyes this past weekend, the swimming and diving team also competed against the Hawkeyes. It would be expected, based on past actions (or lack thereof, in this case), that had the team lost, there would be no article in the paper. However, the team did not lose. In fact, the Cyclones dominated the Hawkeyes from start to finish, winning by a 40 point margin. There was not so much as a mention of the meet in Monday’s Daily. I wasn’t looking for a half-page spread, just a modest article summarizing the meet and highlighting the win.
This was disappointing to me as well as many other athletes and fans. The Daily has failed to recognize that the athletic department is comprised of revenue-producing teams as well as nonrevenue producing sports and that all deserve adequate coverage by the Daily. The Daily should stop being lazy and start doing its job.
