Cyclones survive another overtime scare

Jeremy Gustafson

The ISU women’s basketball team liked San Diego so much they

decided

to

stay a little longer for each game.

After surviving an overtime victory over No. 20 Auburn on Friday

night,

the No. 5 Cyclones fought for their unbeaten lives to rally past the

University of San Diego in another overtime contest and improve

their

record

to 12-0.

Iowa State rallied from a 15-point deficit in the Surf-N-Slam Hoop

Classic Sunday night and won the championship, 69-67, over the

host

team in

the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Angie Welle led the way for the Cyclones, scoring 21 points and

collecting nine rebounds. Point guard Lindsey Wilson, the

tournament’s

most

valuable player, netted 15 points while handing out five assists.<</p>

Iowa State found itself in a big hole early in the second half, and

it’s

unblemished record in serious jeopardy. Down 53-38 with 8:44

left in

the

game the Cyclones went on a furious rally.

A 16-0 run, led by Wilson and Welle, brought Iowa State soaring

back

as

it took the lead. Wilson gave the Cyclones a three-point cushion

with

seconds left, 63-60, but a three-pointer by San Diego’s Kerri

Nakamoto

sent

the game to an extra period. San Diego hit 10 three-pointers in the

game.

Nakamoto had 17 points for the Toreros. Robyn Fortney led San

Diego

with

20 points and five boards.

Iowa State was also hurt by turnovers, a problem that has

plagued

the

team off and on this season. The Cyclones had 29 in the game.

Welle scored four of the Cyclones’ six points in the extra five

minutes,

Wilson added the other two as Iowa State kept its record perfect in

overtime

games at 3-0.

In Friday’s game Auburn was hungry for an upset, but the `Big

Three’

of

Welle, Wilson and Tracy Gahan saw the Cyclones prevail.

Gahan led the way, scoring 18 points. Wilson and Welle were

close

behind

with 17 and 16 respectively.

The Cyclones next action will be at home Jan. 2 as they kickoff

the

Big

12 Conference schedule against Kansas State.

The last time Iowa State played in Hilton Coliseum was against

Northern

Iowa, a 95-55 blowout for the Cyclones on Dec. 22. Iowa State has

a

26-game

home winning streak, which ranks fourth in the nation. Only Notre

Dame,

Tennessee and Connecticut have longer streaks.

Game time is at 7p.m.
