EDITORIAL:Right choice, a week late

He’s back.

Steve Skutnik, the man who a week ago did not have the integrity or qualifications to be election commissioner for the Government of the Student Body, was appointed to the position Wednesday night.

It took two lawsuits, an extra Monday night meeting and countless hours of debate and discussion to finally choose Skutnik for a position he was up for a week ago.

Great use of time.

In fact, GSB has managed this whole incident so well that they’ll be holding an extra meeting next week, Dead Week, to take care of unfinished business. No other student group meets during Dead Week (their members are focusing on school), but GSB has to because they wasted a week debating what amounted to nothing.

In his Dec. 3 letter to the editor, Jonathan Weaver, off-campus GSB senator, said his concern wasn’t with Skutnik’s qualifications, but his “unprofessional conduct.”

Three days later, after the GSB vote to install Skutnik as commissioner, Weaver said he had done “some introspection” – Skutnik was “definitely the most qualified candidate” for the job.

Couldn’t he have realized that a week ago instead of helping to drag the issue out two weeks before finals?

The issue may finally have come to a close, but not before faith in GSB to effectively manage their time and objectives may have suffered.
