LETTER:Seeing through the DPS misconceptions
November 30, 2001
Jonathon Lotz’s letter to the editor is the best example of why GSB does exist. As a Senator, a lot of the time that I would use for studying and having a good time I spend researching student issues. That is a great deal of time that a lot of students don’t have.
Let me answer some of the points of Lotz’s letter. I find it a bit humorous that he is appalled to hear GSB voting on tasers then states that no one cares about GSB. If that is the case, why is he appalled?
As the representative body of the students, GSB was one of a few representative organizations that were asked by President Geoffroy about their opinions about this issue.
Second, we are not out to earn brownie points with DPS. There are quite a number of GSB officials who have the same dislike as you do about DPS. We have no reason to earn points with DPS.
Third, in the time I took to investigate this issue, I heard not only from DPS officers, but also from their families that they would like the extra protection in those potentially dangerous situations. Those officers protect you and me when that protection is needed.
Fourth, his assertion about the parking division getting tasers is completely wrong. The parking division will not be getting tasers. He said that he was sure, yet he provided no support. I say parking division will not receive tasers and that comes from Capt. Gene Desinger, Director Jerry Stuart, and Capt. Doug Houghton, all of DPS.
Fifth, the price of the tasers is extremely small and has already been budgeted.
DPS law enforcement officials with tasers will make this campus that much safer. This is something your government is committed to and has delivered on many times this semester. I guess being called dimwitted by him while presenting essentially nothing would be a complement.
