Students still attend classes after plane crash

Monday’s plane crash in New York appeared to have little effect on ISU students’ class attendance, several ISU professors and students said.

Paula Curran, associate professor of art and design, said all students came to her 10 a.m. class and stayed until dismissed.

“I don’t think all students were aware of it,” Curran said.

Raymond Greer, professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics, said attendance was unaffected at his 11 a.m. class.

“I think we still don’t know for sure what’s happening in New York, and people will be very impacted by this [when they find out],” Greer said.

Lindsay Lawson, senior in accounting, said she heard the news on the radio on her way to class Monday morning, but she still chose to attend class.

“I was already on my way up here,” she said. “They didn’t know what happened, and that it was not necessarily a terrorist attack.”

She said she understands that some students needed to skip class. “Everyone handles things differently,” Lawson said.

Chris McKenney, junior in agricultural systems technology, said he went to his classes because he didn’t feel the plane crash was a terrorist attack.

“I do think there are a lot of students who would take advantage of [this situation] just because they don’t want to go to class,” McKenney said.

While he felt the event was tragic, Carl Venter said he felt the crash didn’t directly impact him.

“It’s a horrible thing, but I still have class,” said Venter, junior in management.
