EDITORIAL:Yes to Hallett’s Quarry
November 5, 2001
Tuesday, voters in Ames will decide the fate of the sale of municipal bonds in order to acquire Hallett’s Quarry. The city wants to acquire the quarry, located north of Ames, so it can convert it into a park and use it as a secondary water source. Ames voters need to vote in favor of this conservation project for several reasons. By voting yes, Ames residents are protecting Ames’ emergency water supply, encouraging recreational opportunities, and supporting wildlife habitat.
And many water quality experts believe the water quality in Hallett’s Quarry is some of the best surface water remaining in the state.
Students need take this opportunity to go out and vote yes. But most importantly students should vote yes for the improvement of the quality of life in Ames. The acquisition of Hallett’s Quarry is a positive move for the city of Ames.
