LETTER:Unwanted surprise with food service
November 8, 2001
While recently eating at Knapp-Storms dining services, I was greeted by an unwelcome visitor – a roach. As my friends and I were eating dinner, a roach fell from the ceiling onto our table and started heading for one of our trays. I should not have to look out for falling roaches while eating meals that cost me $963.00.
I worked at the Knapp-Storms kitchen last year, during the restoration of Wallace-Wilson dining center. I reported the roach problem to management staff then, but my complaint was ignored. When the news spread about roaches, the staff reported to workers and students that it was just a rumor. It was not a rumor, but indeed true.
Now, I have three other witnesses to prove that Knapp-Storms dining center is unsanitary and inappropriate to serve students. Last Saturday was just one of the many times I have seen roaches in Knapp-Storms dining center. Wallace-Wilson dining center is closed for breakfast and lunch. Therefore, all of the approximately 2000 students who live in Towers are forced to eat at Knapp-Storms dining center. I do not have the time in my schedule to find another place to eat, nor should I have to.
Although this is putting my job in jeopardy, I know it should be known about the safety of where people eat. If Knapp-Storms dining center was a restaurant, I am sure customers would not come back. Management wants my friends and I to keep quiet until they know if what we saw was really a roach. I know a roach when I see one, trust me, but by then your Midwest Sandwich or taco meat could contain roaches, roach eggs, or roach droppings. Everyone knows, when you see one roach, there are many others.
