Wicks remembered by friends, relatives, faculty at funeral

Darlene Ann Wicks, a statistics department clerk typist and secretary, was buried in Garden City on Wednesday afternoon.
Wicks, 62, died Sunday of a heart attack at Trinity Medical Center in Rock Island, Ill.
Several ISU faculty members, as well as friends and family, attended the funeral services at Zion Lutheran Church in Garden City. The burial was at Roland Cemetery.
“The church was overflowing; they had more people than they could fit in the church,” said Kenneth Koehler, university professor of statistics. “It was a beautiful service and a beautiful day.”
Dean Isaacson, professor and head of the statistics department, said Wick was a great giver of herself.
“It was clear at the funeral that there were only positive things about her,” he said.
Wicks, who worked at Iowa State for 22 years, was a “wonderful secretary and technical typist,” said Edith Landin, Wicks’ supervisor.
“She really didn’t require much supervising at all,” she said.
Wicks, of Radcliffe, got along with everyone who worked with her, said Landin, administration specialist in statistics.
“Everyone loved her. She was a great team player,” she said. “She volunteered to help anyone when someone needed help.”
Besides working in the statistics department, Wicks volunteered as a Sunday school teacher and was once the Sunday school superintendent for Zion Lutheran Church.
Wicks was in the process of typing a textbook for Koehler when she passed away.
“She was one of the best technical typists I’ve ever worked with,” said Koehler, who had known Wicks since she began work at Iowa State in 1979, “but I’ll remember her mostly because she was a wonderful person.”
Koehler said Wick was the same type of person at work as she was in her personal life.
“They spoke at her funeral about what a tremendous family person she was, but she was that way here with grad students, like a stand-in mother.” she said. “She really will be missed.”
