Kann not even a true ISU fan

Joe Brott

Regarding Michelle Kann’s column (“ISU, not Nebraska, has the real fans”), I would like to break down some knowledge about her comments.

Ms. Kann, instead of trying to tear down a program like Nebraska’s, why don’t you channel your energy (and print space) to the ISU football program? You are preaching to the converted at Iowa State. There are not many Nebraska fans on this campus, and many already hate Nebraska without having read your article. The football program here seems headed in the right direction, so why during these times do you feel like resorting to writing a bitter article that attempts to degrade another football team?

I would now like to comment on your claim that “Iowa State fans know they are the true fans of college football.”

After watching Jack Trice Stadium clear out in the third quarter of the Kansas State game, your argument seems weak at best.

Iowa State has lacked in fan support and loyalty at football games for years, making me wonder when you left the Kansas State game, if you even attended it. Nebraska has sold out every home game in 74,000-seat Memorial Stadium since 1968.

The noise difference between Jack Trice and Memorial Stadium is unbelievable. Maybe if the majority of Iowa State’s fans had this much loyalty it would be their school columnist, not ours, carrying on a bitter tirade in their school’s newspaper. You also better believe that Dan McCarney would give a certain left part of his anatomy to have the fan support that Nebraska enjoys.

I think Nebraska’s fans are best summarized in a quote from Nebraska native and offensive lineman Bob Montgomery when he said, “Their fans get up in the morning thinking Nebraska football, and go to bed at night praying Nebraska football.” If a player ever describes Iowa State’s fans like this that is when you know you have, to use Ms. Kann’s words again, “true fans of college football.”

In conclusion, I believe that Nebraska fans are the epitome of the college football fan. The increased attendance these past years at Jack Trice is obviously a clear result of the apparent turnaround of the ISU football program.

Has everyone forgotten about the Jim Walden years where 26,000 was a common number of fans at a home game? Does this seem like Iowa State has very loyal fans?

It seems to me that Ms. Kann is just another one of the recent additions to the Cyclone football team fan club – it seems doubtful to me that she is a true ISU fan.

To me, a true ISU fan doesn’t whine and complain about teams like Nebraska being good and attempting to bring them down in a jealous manner.
