LETTER:Vote yes on Hallet’s Quarry bond issue

Keven Arrowsmith

On behalf of the Ames Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America, I wish to express our support for the Hallett’s Quarry project.

Our organization strives to be defenders of the air, soil, woods, waters and wildlife. It should be no surprise that we support this project.

In fact, we have a history of being involved in the protection of the land around Hallett’s Quarry. In 1958, the Ames Ikes planted trees on land located north of the lake. This project created wildlife habitat, provided protection for the water in the lake and helped slow down erosion on the hills.

Once again we are interested in protection of Hallett’s Quarry. The Ames Ikes encourage everyone to go to the polls on Nov. 6 and cast a yes vote for the Hallett’s Quarry bond issue.

If this referendum passes, Ames will be able to issue $4.97 million in bonds to support the purchase of the Hallett’s Quarry property. This money will be combined with a $1.5 million Vision Iowa grant and almost $1 million of in-kind labor from the Story County Conservation Board. The total price of this project is $7.5 million, a small price to pay to protect such a valuable water source as Hallett’s Quarry.

If the bond issue passes, Ames will have an emergency water supply. During drought conditions, water can be pumped from Hallett’s Quarry to the Skunk River. This recharges the aquifers that feed the wells where the city gets its water. If the city is unable to purchase Hallett’s Quarry, we could lose our access to this valuable source of water.

Three constructed wetlands, a prairie and buffer strips will be established to maintain the high quality of water in the lake. These areas will also create numerous educational opportunities for area students.

Links to the Ames bike trail system, a pedestrian bridge, hiking trails, a ramp for non-motorized boats and opportunities for fishing will provide quality recreational for Ames residents and visitors.

Please vote yes on Nov. 6. We may never have this opportunity again.
