Stocking to be filled with more gadgets, gizmos

Over the last several years, a variety of gadgets and gizmos have made their way into our daily lives and onto our shopping lists.

Whether it be personal digital assistants, cell phones or new entertainment products, more and more find a space on store shelves every day. And retailers are expecting these items to sell as well as ever this holiday season.

While there are fewer new or standout products this season than other years, many retailers say existing products will fill stockings. But some new toys will arrive this season to complete the shopping scene.

Cell phones seem to one of the biggest sellers for many retailers. Denise Keith, public relations director for electronics Web site 800.com, said phones and wireless services have been a big seller in the past and will be this year, as well. She said her company will see a big boost in the sale of hands-free accessories, as more people and local laws make the move to safety.

Brad Jarnagin, manager at Best Buy, SE 14th Street, Des Moines, and Garren Bugh, store manager of Radio Shack in North Grand Mall, 2810 Grand Ave., both said cell phones are one of their biggest sellers for the holiday season. Bugh said cell phone companies are launching holiday specials, and more people are finding now to be the right time to buy a phone.

All three business representatives said another holiday focus is personal digital assistants. With price drops and improved technology, this is another item people are making room for in their daily lives.

Digital cameras, both video and still, have also been moving off the shelves. Brenda Sherry, public relations officer for Buy.com, said cameras are one of the top sellers for the site. Keith and Jarnagin both said cameras are one of the top three items consumers are seeking.

But Buy.com expects video games to be an even bigger seller than cameras, Sherry said. With the release of both Microsoft’s XBOX and Nintendo’s GameCube this November, there has been no better time to be a gamer.

Toys-R-Us, 1211 E. Army Post Rd., Des Moines, also expects video games to be a huge seller this year, said manager Jesse Moon.

But the two new systems may spark a little competition, said Matt Ryan, manager of Software Etc. in North Grand Mall. With a solid library of games and existing owners, the year-old PlayStation2 will be making some of the biggest sales, he said. Older PC games also have been constant sellers, such as The Sims from Maxis, he said.

Many of the retailers said they still are focusing on their constant sellers as well. Keith said movies are big every year, so 800.com plans on them selling well, especially the more family-oriented films such as “Star Wars Episode I,” “The Grinch” and “Shrek.” She also said gift sets are popular this year, such as “The Godfather” trilogy DVDs and “The Sopranos” seasons.

Jarnagin said Best Buy always has trouble keeping items such as boom boxes on the shelf and expects no difference this year. He said personal audio, such as MP3 players, are making a big showing this year.

So, come this Dec. 25, we should be hearing many shouts of glee because nothing makes someone feel like a kid again more than a shiny new toy with lots of cool little buttons.
