LETTER:Daily opinion section needs improvement
November 7, 2001
In Monday’s “Editor’s Note,” Andrea Hauser asked ISU students “to tell the Daily staff what we’re doing right and what we need to improve on.” I would like to share my opinion of the Daily.
In the three years I have attended Iowa State, I have read the Daily on a daily basis. I think the Daily has improved its news, A&E, and sports section. I enjoy reading them. However, I have been very disappointed by the Daily’s opinion page.
I remember back in the day when we had people like Greg Jerrett, Elton Wong, and others writing very thought-provoking articles. They were interesting, fun to read, and you could almost always guarantee that there was going to be someone writing in to argue his or her point of view.
I have also noticed the lack of people writing in to express their opinion. I have always believed that a good article will bring in lots of responses – yet I haven’t seen that happening.
I am also getting tired of the “Editor’s Note.” Within this article, Ms. Hauser has defended the decisions that both she and the editorial board have made this year.
I believe that an editor or an editorial board should not try to explain their decision process, unless they have made a mistake. If they have done a decent job, then their actions should speak for themselves.
Finally, I dislike Ms. Hauser’s use of the “Editor’s Note” to present the “hardships” that she and the editorial team goes through every day while working at the Daily. I understand and greatly appreciate that they work hard.
However, when someone continually reminds you of the sacrifices they make for you, it becomes very old.
