LETTER:West letter nothing but hidden ploy

Dan Skinner

Matt West’s letter in Friday’s Daily was a thin ploy to push a radical agenda under the guise of the politically relevant topic of prisoners in Afghanistan.

Firstly, he characterizes opposition to the Christian Right as “imprudent” at this time. Opposition to a large, subversive and politically powerful organization that seeks to alter the fundamental principals on which American life is built is prudent. Their quest to dominate school boards, influence elections, bully politicians, and tear down the wall of separation of church and state is as great a threat to the American way of life as any terrorist.

The Taliban has an oppressive religious regime with no room for tolerance. The Christian Right wants the same thing for America, only under a different religion. He later writes “In the heat of passion, Jerry Falwell placed the blame for the terrorists attacks on certain groups according to their lifestyles. Falwell’s declaration . is based in loving truth.” This whitewash defies all measures of credibility.

It is very sad that someone would attempt to justify this lunacy, but it makes a telling point. To the Christian Right, even hate-filled, vile and bitter attacks on your political and ideological opponents is “Christian love.”
