LETTER:The solution to budget problems

Palmer Holden

Iowa State does not seem to be able to come to grips with the budget crunch, except by across-the-board cuts and freezing faculty positions as they become vacant. This isn’t a good way to strengthen the university. May I suggest that since we cannot decide, or do not wish to decide, which departments or colleges are central to Iowa State’s mission, let’s put the names of all the colleges or departments in a hat. Then draw out names and close them until enough money is saved to meet the budget shortages.

This would be equal to and possibly better than the all-university death by attrition program upon which we currently rely. At least remaining colleges or departments could be maintained or enhanced.
