Snoop’s `undesirables’
October 7, 2001
All diversity is good diversity.
That is, except for rap music and gang members, according to the University of Iowa.
U of I officials rejected the possibility of a Halloween Snoop Dogg concert because it would attract “undesirables.” “Undesirables” were clarified as “people who might be lawbreakers.”
Under this broad definition, a lot people could be defined as undesirable. Hawkeyes who smoke marijuana or drink alcohol under age. In that case, there’d be just as many “undesirables” at a Bob Dylan or Phish show.
U of I Public Safety Director Chuck Green said the concert “would draw quite a few undesirables from various cities and probably quite a few gang bangers with weapons on them or in their vehicles.” So even though the university preaches diversity, apparently fans of the “Puff, Puff, Pass” tour aren’t the type of diversity worth attracting. These close-minded university leaders are saying one type of music – hip hop – leads to crime.
Just because a musical artist has a lengthily police record doesn’t mean his listeners do. This decision further perpetuates the belief that the state of Iowa is close-minded and incapable of drawing big names to entertain.
U of I officials need to start practicing what they preach when it comes to diversity. Even if it’s Snoop Dogg.
