The ISU greek community may be getting bigger as two new fraternities vie for an open spot on campus.

Chi Phi and Kappa Alpha Order, two traditional Southern fraternities, were chosen after applications were sent out to five national chapters, said Chris Hall, vice president of operations for InterFraternity Council.

The council is meeting with Kappa Alpha Order national representatives today and Friday, said Hall, senior in political science.

Chi Phi fraternity national representatives met with the council and saw the ISU greek community in September.

The greek community will decide based on what the fraternity can offer Iowa State, Hall said.

“We want a strong national fraternity that has the values of the ISU greek community and has an independent autonomy of a fraternity,” Hall said.

Each fraternity official said that their organization has lots to offer Iowa State.

“What we can bring is a new fraternity to campus that puts decision making on undergrads in the house, bringing new experiences and leadership to its members,” said Michael Azarian, national director of undergraduate services for Chi Phi fraternity.

Azarian said Chi Phi used to have a chapter here but left campus in 1976 due to lack of membership.

Stewart Harvey, national director of chapter development for Kappa Alpha Order fraternity, said he saw many reasons why this fraternity would like to come to Iowa State.

“I think KAO has an excellent expansion program and we like to go wherever it makes sense for us,” Harvey said.

Kappa Alpha Order has just started chapters at the University of Northern Colorado and the University of New Mexico, but would like to see more chapters started in the Midwest, Harvey said.

One of the things KAO looks for at new campuses is how the student body and the administration respond to the greek community, Harvey said.

Either Chi Phi or KAO has the choice of moving into the Delta Chi house, 405 Hayward Ave., Hall said.

The Delta Chi has been looking for an organization to lease its chapter’s house since it surrendered its charter in January.
