Most commonly occurs in hoofed animals
May affect the lungs with symptoms like fever, aches or fatigue; the skin with itching and a black scar in the exposed area; or gastrointestinal tract with nausea, abdominal distress or fever
Symptoms usually occur within seven days of exposure
There have been no reported cases of transmission from person to person
Immunizations are not given to close
contacts of infected people unless there is exposure to the same source
If exposed, infection can be prevented by antibiotics in its early stages
Vaccination against it is
effective but not recommended or offered to the general public
Early antibiotic treatment is essential
Seek medical attention and notify the local health authority if you suspect infection
