ISU fashion design students display work in showcase

ISU fashion designers are ready to show off their skills with style.
The annual “Showcase 2001: Extraordinary Image” will be on display from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. today in the LeBaron Hall lounge and will feature the latest works from the College of Design.
Amanda Hall, senior in apparel merchandising, design and production, said the showcase has been going on for at least four years as the counterpart to the spring fashion show.
“Students do everything to get the show up and running,” she said. “It’s a way for people to come and see what the [textiles and clothing department] has done.”
The showcase will feature about 45 designs displayed on mannequins, mood boards, presentation boards and designer biography boards, Hall said.
“Mood and presentation boards are used to show an overall design of a garment using fabric swatches, and a designer biography board tries to sell an existing designer’s ideas,” she said. “There’s a good variety on display.”
Hall was on a committee that formed a judging panel to select which of the 80 entries would be in the showcase. The anonymous judges included managers from clothing stores in Ames and Des Moines and a professor from the College of Design.
Eileen Blase, senior in apparel merchandising, design and production, was chosen to display her “recycled jean outfit” in the showcase. She made a skirt from oversized pockets and a matching vest from waistbands she cut out of old jeans. Blase completed the piece last spring in her draping class.
“I probably needed 15 pairs of jeans to make the outfit,” Blase said. “I used to wear those big, huge jeans, and I liked the pockets on them. They’re full of detail.”
Original pieces in the showcase also include shoes made from scratch and a jacket made completely of yarn. “People didn’t make things out of cloth,” Hall said. “They used materials like plastic and paper. The show emphasizes creativity. Everything in the show has its own way of speaking to you.”
