Clearing up some misinterpretations

Mansoor Khadir

This is regarding the two articles published in Monday’s Daily. As President of the Muslim Student Association I feel it is my duty and obligation to clarify statements that were made in the articles.

In the article “Attacks alter view of Islam,” Muslims don’t support the mass killing of civilians here in the United States or around the world. However we, at the same time, condemn the visible injustice and the oppression of Muslims around the world.

In regards to the article “Muslim do not condone violence,” there were some fundamental inaccuracies in the statements that were said. Muslims do not rank prophets or scriptures of God, as was indicated by the article, provided that they are unaltered. Rather, we believe in each and every prophet sent by God to guide humanity.

In addition, Islam considers acts of “self-defense” (under specific rules) and regards ways to protect principles and beliefs of Islam, as a form of Jihad. Another point that needs to be explained further is that women and men have equal rights in Islam. Yet, because of the differences between males and females, Islam teaches Muslims not to force women out of their own natural position.

The prophet Mohammed gave the similitude of changing the nature of women would be like breaking a rib when attempting to straighten it.

The Muslim Student Association wanted certain statements to be more clearly explained so there are no misinterpretations of Islam or Muslims.
