EDITORIAL: No bells causes confusion
October 18, 2001
Hearts across campus were broken at this year’s Homecoming Mass Campaniling.
After months of applying Chapstick and practicing puckering up, many students were left disappointed Wednesday night.
Campaniling starts at the stroke of midnight and the kissing lasts throughout the 12 bell rings. At that moment, an ISU student is transformed into a true Iowa Stater.
On Wednesday night, ISU couples were poised and ready for the big moment.
Couples glanced at their watches in anticipation listening to the Nadas – only to realize that it was 12:07 a.m.
The Mass Campaniling moment had come and gone without the bells to announce the smooching tradition.
So instead of the traditional minute of making out from midnight to 12:01 a.m., all this campus had was kissing confusion.
Couples didn’t know when to start locking lips and more importantly, many groping couples with grass-stained jeans didn’t know when to stop.
An ISU tradition has been stained.
