Some malls change plans for Halloween

Some of the state’s biggest malls have canceled regular Halloween activities because of the terrorist attacks, but North Grand Mall’s “Beggars’ Night” went on as planned Tuesday night.
“Our Halloween events are tradition,” said Nikki Peterson, marketing director for North Grand Mall, 2801 Grand Ave. “Why should we put our lives on hold? . We really just want to go on with our day-to-day activities.”
Some malls in the state are responding to a threat of more terrorism by canceling trick-or-treating activities and increasing security.
Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville and Mall of the Bluffs in Council Bluffs both changed their agenda for Halloween.
Personnel with the General Growth Properties Company, which owns Coral Ridge and Mall of the Bluffs, decided not to have any Halloween activities in order to remain sensitive to the recent national tragedies.
A recording for customers at the Mall of the Bluffs explains why the mall will not host trick-or-treating this year.
“In light of the national events, Mall of the Bluffs feels it will be inappropriate to sponsor Halloween festivities,” the recording stated.
Monica Nadeau, assistant general manager for Coral Ridge Mall, said management hadn’t planned any special events for Halloween this year, but extra safety measures are being taken.
“I think that is something everyone has done or will plan to do,” Nadeau said, noting that mall security was increased.
Paul Stender, general manager of Valley West Mall in West Des Moines, said it also increased security for the evening.
Stender said it tried to make everything as normal as possible so people wouldn’t be fearful of participating in the mall’s celebration of Halloween.
On Tuesday afternoon, he said he didn’t expect the threat of terrorist activity to deter people from going to the mall for the evening.
“The weather, more than anything, will prevent people from coming out,” Stender said.
