Grentz’s letter full of ignorance
October 7, 2001
While reading Tim Grentz’s letter in the Oct. 5 Daily, several things struck me as ignorant, but one comment in particular caught my attention. Mr. Grentz said, “The Second Amendment is the most outdated thing in our lawbooks today.”
He should consider the fact that, contrary to popular belief, the Second Amendment wasn’t written to ensure that Americans would have firearms to hunt and feed their families (it pretty much went without saying in those times that if you couldn’t hunt, your family would die). The purpose of the Second Amendment was to ensure that Americans could defend their freedom against tyranny.
You see, the Revolutionary War had just been fought, and many proud patriots shed their blood so people like Grentz could say whatever they liked without fear of reprisal (yet another “outdated” concept, I suppose). The Second Amendment was put into place to defend the First Amendment, plain and simple.
Now, there are those who would argue that even if every single gun owner in America banded together against a corrupt United States government (this is merely an example, people, not a call to arms) they wouldn’t stand a chance. My response to that is simple, “If you’re being pushed off a cliff, you may as well try to fly.”
