Weezer would’ve been great choice

I’m writing this letter in response to Brooke Wardyn’s letter published in the Sept. 6 edition of the Daily cheering the arrival of Aerosmith to Ames in October. I’m disappointed that you assume that a band has to be around for 20 years to be a good ticket draw.

The reason very few people went to the Vertical Horizon show during VEISHEA last year is because whoever booked them did it too late – from the looks of it, Vertical Horizon was a flash-in-the-pan act, and they came here after the flash went out. They tried to do the opposite of the past underground VEISHEA bookings (Black Eyed Peas and Crystal Method) and jumped on what they thought might be the next big thing.

And I find it very ironic that you pick Weezer as a bad choice for a show here. There is a massive fan base for Weezer, and they’re all anxious for the band to come to their town. Weezer is currently the most searched band on pollstar.com as far as tour listings are concerned (two spots ahead of Aerosmith, oddly enough), and Ames is a hotbed of power pop, from local acts like Pookey Bleum and regional bands like Ultimate Fakebook to national groups like Weezer.

I will concede that Aerosmith has had staying power (though I don’t really enjoy their music,) but at least show some respect for the newer bands out there. You don’t need 20 years of experience to make great music.
