Another accusation, another lie
September 3, 2001
Here we go again. Many years have passed since Susan Smith put her small town in South Carolina and America to shame with her allegations that an African American male carjacked her and drove it into a nearby creek killing her two sons inside.
Susan Smith, under interrogations, later recanted her story and confessed. Charles Stuart caused authorities in Boston to wrongfully harass and incarcerate innocent African American men in efforts to find a fictitious person(s) who supposedly killed Stuart’s wife and unborn child in a botched robbery, only to find out later that Charles Stuart did it.
Accusation by a delusional young lady claiming she was assaulted by four African American males on campus in broad daylight.
This accusation did not only take the campus by surprise but the Ames community as well. I was saddened to hear on the evening news’ “Top Story” that something like this could have happened on campus.
The young lady that made this accusation has caused great shame, not only to herself, but also to the community she wrongfully accused. She undoubtedly needs some kind of help.
The university needs to take some disciplinary action. A public apology should be made to the community she tried to recklessly tarnish.
Thanks to the Ames police, DPS and local authorities involved for remaining level-handed and not exacerbating this accusation.
Heaven help if authorities here would have handled this the way the authorities handling the Susan Smith or the Charles Stuart cases.
