Students meet companies at Career Day

Hilton Coliseum will be packed with more than 190 companies and organizations for Business and Liberal Arts and Sciences Career Day from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Heather Johnson Huntley, program coordinator for career services and adviser for Career Day, said Career Day is an opportunity for students to meet with company representatives and to get a general feel for how to act in a business atmosphere.

Erin Larson, co-chair of Business Week, said, “[Career Day] gives students an opportunity to meet with companies to interview for possible internships [and jobs].”

The chance to meet recruiters and show what students have done is one of the important benefits, said Larson, junior in marketing.

Abbey Brown, co-chair for Business Week said, “It makes it easier to reach a lot of people at the same time in the same room.”

The day also is meant to help students find out more about different career choices and jobs. Huntley said it lets students know what’s available for them.

Freshmen through seniors are encouraged to go to Career Day.

“It can be intimidating when you go as a sophomore looking for an internship,” Huntley said. “[Going as a freshman] helps them prepare.”

Although the fair focuses on students in the colleges of business and LAS, other majors should consider going as well.

“Some [companies] are willing to take any major,” said Brown, junior in transportation and logistics.

With a variety of companies – from non-profit organizations to insurance companies to companies such as IBM – there are always options for most majors, Huntley said.

Last year, there were about 6,500 students at Career Day and the same crowds are expected for this year, Huntley said. Eighty companies are participating in Interview Day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday at Hilton.

Brown said she suggests going to Career Day, because students can meet companies who will be conducting interviews, and it relaxes students for the interview.
