False claim hurts everyone involved
September 3, 2001
I wanted to address the issue over the false sexual assault claim that was recently made by one of our fellow students. Like every other student I was extremely shocked when I first heard what had supposedly happened to this individual on campus.
I found it hard to believe that a person could be kidnapped at gunpoint from one of the busiest areas on campus.
Those of us who have taken chemistry classes know that the area in front of Gilman is extremely congested, especially on the hour. So if you’re like me, you were baffled at the thought of this actually occurring.
Sure enough we were informed by Friday’s paper that these claims were false. Apparently they were made in some sick attempt to gain attention.
First of all, and most importantly, this person should have more respect for herself. And secondly, she should have more respect for the university.
Not only did these false claims alert students, faculty, and any law enforcement that was involved, but I’m sure the news also reached far outside of Ames.
Who’s to say that some potential ISU students weren’t frightened by these claims, to the point where they may not choose to attend here.
Who wants to go to a school where you can be kidnapped at gunpoint in the middle of the day?
Not only did this person disrespect herself, but she also dragged the university through the mud as well, a university that is safe for the most part, and is continuing to work to make campus safer. My advice to this individual is if you want to disrespect yourself for attention, streak through campus. But don’t take the university down with you.
