Time for another Daily cartoonist
September 19, 2001
Carmen Cerra’s cartoons following the horrible attack on the
United States have all appeared patriotic thus far, and yet I cannot
help but wonder what he will write once the inevitable and
deserved retaliatory strikes from the United States commence. I
suspect it will look something like this – President Bush
strangling a dead baby (while in the background, missiles fall on
refugee camps) and the word “Justice” prominently placed before
him.
Don’t interpret this letter as an attack on Carmen Cerra’s
patriotism; it is not.
However, from my years as a reader of the Iowa State Daily I have
found that offensive, tasteless, contrived and empty are all
excellent descriptors for Cerra’s work. His monocular view of world
affairs and obvious hate for all things conservative dismays me
every time I pick up the Daily. It is irresponsible of the Iowa State
Daily to allow Cerra to continue as the sole cartoonist, considering
his strip’s prominent position in the paper and his crude and
offensive artwork.
