The ISU community is getting ready to “Get S.O.A.K.ed” for the weekend by the National Pan-Hellenic Council fraternities.

S.O.A.K – or Sigmas, Omegas, Alphas, Kappas – is three days of activities to show unity in the black fraternal system.

National Pan-Hellenic Council consists of nine historically black sororities and fraternities. All but one – Iota Phi Theta – are represented here on campus.

The men of Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi and Phi Beta Sigma want to show they can work together and weed out any speculations or rumors that they don’t get along with each other, said Lawrence Johnson, senior in psychology and member of Phi Beta Sigma.

“We all just started meeting this summer and decided we needed to make the black greek presence stronger,” said Brad Johnson, junior in meteorology and member of Alpha Phi Alpha.

The festivities begin Friday afternoon with an exhibition step show in front of the library at 1:30 p.m.

At 6 p.m., a men-only forum will be held in the Terrace Room of Friley Hall for questions about National Pan-Hellenic Council fraternities and an overview of each fraternity’s history and philanthropy.

Kappa Alpha Psi will host a reception after the forum, and a party will follow in the Memorial Union at 10 p.m.

Omega Psi Phi fraternity will be hosting a Pajama Party in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union on Saturday night.

The weekend of activities will end with a Back to School barbecue at the Black Cultural Center on Welch Avenue at 1 p.m.

“I think this is an excellent opportunity and display of unity,” said Alisa Frandsen, interim director for greek affairs. “I think it’s wonderful.”

Frandsen also said she will attend the step show.

La’Tifini McClinton of Delta Sigma Theta sorority said she hopes the National Pan-Hellenic Council sororities can do the same.

“This will have a very positive reflection on the community,’ said McClinton, junior in community health education. “We will definitely be there to support if we are not participating.”
