Sixties folk icon denounces attacks
Yusuf Islam, formerly Cat Stevens, the popular `60s and `70s folk singer who converted to Islam in 1977, released an official statement expressing his “heartfelt horror” at the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center.
“While it is still not clear who carried out the attack, it must be stated that no right thinking follower of Islam could possibly condone such an action: The Quran equates the murder of one innocent person with the murder of the whole of humanity.
“We pray for the families of those who lost their lives in this unthinkable act of violence as well as all those injured.” Islam said in his statement.
The London-born singer/songwriter released multiple albums in the `60s and `70s to critical and popular acclaim.
He was best known to the mainstream public for his song “Wild World,” from the hugely successful “Tea for the Tillerman.”
He also had a number one album in 1972 called “Catch a Bull at Four.”
More recently, Islam has given most of his time to charity work in England.
