Proper respect
September 18, 2001
Since last week’s terrorist attacks, America seems to be more united than it has been throughout most of our lives.
One way people are showing their patriotism is through the United States flag.
“Old Glory” is beginning to be difficult to find in stores that normally don’t sell them well.
Wal-Mart sold 43 4-by-6 foot flags in one day. The average number the store sells in a year is nine.
Wal-Mart and K-Mart have both ran out of flags.
While it is great to see people unite and show love for their country, it is also important they know proper flag etiquette.
It would be nice if people followed the rules of the flag when they are displaying the stars and stripes. At the least, the flag could be taken down at sunset.
A person does not have to do this. If you bought the flag it is your property and you can do with it what you want. However, it would show great respect to those who have risked and lost their lives for this country to display the flag properly.
Although it would be nice if everyone participated in the proper displaying of the flag, the most important thing is that the country is once again united.
